About Chester Train Station

The Chester Train Station serves as the headquarters for the Chester Municipal Heritage Society. This partnership enables the society to maintain and operate the station as a historical and cultural center. The station is not only a museum, but also a community hub, offering a range of exhibits and activities that celebrate local history and artisanship.

Established in 2017 by Carolyn Conrad and James W. Isaacs, the Station 20 Handcraft Shoppe was created to unite artisans and crafters, providing a venue to showcase their work while supporting the Chester Train Station. This co-operative is staffed by volunteers, summer students, and vendors, enabling the Station 20 Shop and Museum complex to stay open for 5-6 months each year. A portion of sales and donations helps keep the building heated during winter.

The Chester Train Station features a variety of exhibits curated by the Chester Municipal Heritage Society:

  • Explore Oak Island Display: Showcasing the area's oldest Oak Island exhibit with artifacts, historical pictures, and insights into the famous treasure hunt.

  • Chester Train Station Display: Highlighting the history and significance of the train station.

  • Foreman Hawboldt Exhibit: Displaying pumps and other machines designed by Foreman Hawboldt, known for developing the make-and-break engine that revolutionized fishing boats.

  • Gold Mining Display: Exploring the history of gold mining in the region.

  • Nova Scotia's First Female Farrier Display: Celebrating the achievements of the province's first female farrier.

Additionally, the grounds include a labyrinth designed for peace and calmness, a geocaching location, and a Visitor Information Center (VIC) with maps, brochures, and information on local attractions.

The Chester Train Station is an active community center, hosting a variety of events and activities:

  • Chester Farmers & Artisans Market: Held every Friday from May to October, featuring fresh produce, fish, flowers, and crafts.

  • Craft Circles and Demonstrations: Organized by the Chester Municipal Heritage Society, these include Tuesday Afternoon Craft Circles and Wednesday Afternoon Craft Demonstrations, where visitors can enjoy conversation, crafts, and refreshments.

The Chester Train Station is the first stop on the Chester Connection Trail and a convenient rest spot along the Rum Runners Trail, offering amenities such as a porta-potty and cold drinks.

Annual Events and Celebrations:

The station hosts numerous annual events that contribute to its vibrant community atmosphere, including:

  • Chester Garden Club’s Plant Sale

  • Chester Heritage Society’s Auction & Flea Market

  • Chester’s Big Canada Day Celebration

These events, along with the various exhibits and activities, make the Chester Train Station a cultural and historical focal point for the community and visitors alike.
